hahaha, at last, i've taken one model to game rez. Hopefully there will be more to come in my time in the PCP programme.

Currently as the model stands, it is at 10.002 tris, 3 x 2k maps and test rendered in marmoset engine. Still has lots of kinks to work out, the textures for the most part, but i think i spent enough of my hols of this model, time to move on to 2d.

P.S marmoset toolbag is a total dream to use, tons of features

Sending off LY was rather bittersweet, knowing that he's off to pursue his own future and the good times we had will never be the same. So LY, hope you adapt well in HK, which i think you will do good, if not awesome there. But seeing you gabberin' nonsense to the guy handling your bag at the checking in counter during departure is quite a worrying sign, hahahaha.

Anyways, some updates, 1st pic: the bust i'm working on, sculpting portraits could be a nice way to relieve some monotony and just have fun.

2nd pic: the project i was previously working on and went fail-way. Poor or almost non-existent pre-production pretty much killed it, i suppose.

Working on the concept for my next project. This one, definitely, going for the finish!

wow, doing concepts is hard, period. There's some fresh initial ideas, but after those, i'm all dried up. Trying to think of something that gives an impression that it will work in reality and at the same time, trying to make it look cool, is hard. So, + respect for all the concept artist out there.

Here's some for the week, i think my experience in sketching on my NDS really helps. At least it made the concepting slightly easier on making stuff that looks cool. Well, somewhere along the way, i gave up the notion of concepting stuff that work, hahahaha

This is technically gonna be the final render. Although lotsa stuff is still missing, but i'm calling it a day... or done, lol. The verdict is during the final compiling of my demo reel, ill touch it up and include this piece inside.

I've learned tons of stuff from this mini project, even though the final image is not yet a pretty thing to look at.But ill take it from there, and learn more from it.

Also, this will be the last few posts of this blog. I'll be shifting from blog to a brick and mortar website in the near future, have not actually done out the web pages yet. cos i've been thinking about this blog and my email..... dopeymelody and jawrazor69 is probably too uncouth and unprofessional for a professional site name and email... relics of my secondary school naming, lol. I guess ill be adding Dreamweaver to my Learning List.

So..., to wrap things up, my next thing will be a series of projects spanning from now till my registration of the Ubisoft-Digipen campus. These individual projects will consist of stuff from concept (which is uncharted territory for me), modelling, texturing(unfamiliar territory), and final output (ditto).

well, after nearly 3 months of inactivity in this blog and some talking-to by Shuguo, here's an update on what i'm up to for the past few months.

starting with 2D, i'm working on three sketchbooks and an easel.

a A5 sketchbook, which was a christmas present from the old man, A4 sketchbook i think i had it from poly and A3 sketchbook, from Artfriend, awesome to draw but a bitch to scan. I havent been drawing much on the A5 since i ORDed and moved out from Bedok Camp, so nothing on it. So most of the drawings are done on either the A4 or A3.

That's all for now from 2D side, moving on to 3D.

Previously, i was working on my Warcraft Figures Modelling project, starting off with the priestess. Off the bat, i started on a full female model.

My past few female models failed because of the anatomy, well, this one is no different, lol. So, back to anatomy studies again... Regardless, the another objective of this project is for me to practice my hard surface modelling e.g armor bracer etc, so i went on for her accessories.

This is still a very WIP piece. The current details are not sharp enough and most of the details on the armor are still missing. After spending nearly 2 weeks trial & error and craving out details, i decided to take a shot at the texturing part. (cos i got bored, lol)

I think the initial texturing was the death knell for this project. After fiddling with some textures, i realised that the eyes is killing the model, too dead is the word i guess. I tried fixing it, but to no avail... and thus this project is going into the fail bin. But nonetheless, i learned a lot from this one.

And so, my next stop is the face again. Looking back at my previous busts, the eyes really suck. Wondered why i never noticed it till now, hahaha. And furthermore, i did not really try push the model to its end ( as in through texturing, shading and finally rendering). Thus my current project is that.

For this part, i tried some quick 1hr sculpts. I surfed around the net for some interesting faces and used them as ref. After which i chose one and used it as base.

And this is the present WIP. Invested quite a bit of time on the eyes. Next up will be another round of tweaking, after that, ill be testing shaders.

Ending off, i spent quite a bit of time on 2D, learning from my fail of the Digipen-Ubisoft entrance exams, hahaha. The results i wanted have yet to bear fruit, but ill be keeping at it.

despite my inevitable setback from my Ubisoft-Digipen entrance exams caused by my incompetence in 2d, i pushed on in my 3d! This newest, with lotsa reference, i sculpted something never seen before in my previous sculpts, Hair! The clothes was sculpted rather quickly, so its quite cui. But nonetheless, i had tons of fun!

New Resolve....

yet another year came and gone, and i've aged another year. Looking back at the past, time really flew past real fast. Memories of the past do not actually feel distant but seemed so recent. I still remember vividly how i'm cracking my skull, choosing which school or polytechnic to enroll, how i met my friends, incidents with my family. Yet those events happened so long ago....

Looking at the present, i'm 21 now, turning 22 this year, getting back my freedom from the government soon, cracking my skull, choosing which university to enroll, planning my course of action for the future, my brother's getting married, parents getting old, uncles who i remember as youngsters are fathers now.... these things which i imagine of happening in the very far future are actually happening now! Everything seemed so unreal. The fact that i'm already 21 is so surreal...

Sometimes i think Time can be so cruel. Things i thought were evergreen are now fading into the past, into my memories. Yet taught me to cherish. Family, friends, people you meet everyday, streets you walk along, buildings which you walk past. Nothing lasts forever, and cherish them while they are still around.

Actually the point of this post is my new year's resolution, somehow it turned into a ranting. Anyhow, here's my New Resolve.

To my Family

1. i will be more filial to my parents. (sometimes when i'm too engrossed or too irritated with something, ill ignore or brush them off with a retort)

2. i will spend more time with my brother. (sometimes when he took the trouble to find time to be with me, i'm at somewhere else or i'm too engrossed fragging online)

3. i will talk to my future sister-in-law more. (i'm not quite good at talking to ladies who i'm not familiar with, actually i suck at it, gotta improve and make her feel at home with the family)

4. i wll spend more time with my grandparents. (i really will love to see them, but the journey sometimes really put me off, gotta overcome that)

To my Friends

1. i will spend more time with my Primary & Secondary School pals. (Been frequent with my Poly pals outings, not so with my other pals)

2. i will be more sensitive to others (sometimes i crack jokes at the expense of others, gotta improve on that)

3. i will try to diversify my topics of interest (i love talking about CG, Art, soccer and games, but not so with Mandarin pop stars and soap dramas, gotta try to keep a lookout on those topics)

4. i will TRY to diversify my taste buds. (I LOVE BK. and to my pals who were bloody sick of it, bear with me a while more)

To Myself

1. i will improve on my speech. (Mum's been pointing that out for a long time, sometimes when i'm tired, i'll be too bloody lazy to move my damn mouth or tongue, and everything i said becomes a murmur, so absolutely, gotta improve)

2. i will improve on my fitness. (Quite a disgrace actually, NSFs slim down during their term in NS, not much for me. And furthermore, i'm quite keen on participating in marathons and stairs climbing competition, not so in dying while trying them, so yeah...)

3. i will improve on my personal hygiene and appearance. (will try to maintain a prim and proper hairstyle and shave frequently even after i ORD)

4. i will improve on my drawing. (gotten my shock therapy recently, courtesy of Liesl. Her improvement is quantum. She was good in the past, from what i can remember. Now her skills is off the bloody roof! Gotta try to match that!)

5. I WILL IMPROVE ON MY CG SKILLS. (bloody hell, this one definitely, all caps baby. ill do it or die trying)

That's about it i guess. Quite a bloody long resolution, which i will try my very best to adhere to all of them. Like Shuguo said, talk is cheap. Darn right, talk is really bloody cheap. As a testament of my resolve, as of now, i'm deleting all my installed games in my computer!

it kinda occurred to me lately that there's a flip side of learning anatomy, maybe too much of it. After study bits here and there, i got this concept of how the part of the body should look like. So i proceed sculpting. The eagerness of wanting to put down what i know probably is screwing my sculpt process lately. Some sculpting later, i was thinking," this part should be fit into this, this to that, and yadda yadda...". Zoom out, the whole sculpt gone fucked. Then, hmmm.... too engrossed with the muscles...

So morale of the story, zoom out as far as you can manage, and sculpt big strokes. lolol....

One for the day. Four for the week. Looking back at what i done, i tried neither beauty nor brawn yet. Tried the beauty part in the morning. Somehow i couldnt get the sculpt going. Things i found out when attempting a "pretty" female face. Subtle features in a female face are a lot harder than a chiseled and defined face. Most of the features have to be muted and the landmarks muted as well.

Here are some paintings i did before i enlist and during my bloc leave. Before i enlist, i did some trials and errors in monochromatic paintings. After some failures, i got two decent stuff, that actually look like faces. Just when i got the momentum, my time to enlist to the army came and i got locked in an island.

After some bla bla, i had my bloc leave and painted some more. Then i got tossed into a camp again. And.... that's that.

These paintings are painted from photos from flickr. Lots of nice photos there, a treasure trove of facial, landscapes and many other references. I tried replicating the lighting and value of the photos. Still haven really got a grip on lighting and forms during painting. So, yea, gotta practice a few more portraits before i actually proceed to colours...
